Yes, You Read Correctly, DC is a NAEP Standout

Via the WaPo and others, we learn that DC Public Schools made substantial gains in NAEP over the last six years.  While most of the other big urbans were flat, DCPS’s surge means that the system is no longer at the bottom of the pack nationally.

I mention this for two reasons.  One, because the DCPS team is my old professional home, and I couldn’t be happier that the kids in that city are finally reaping the benefits of years of hard work.

Two, an almost silly amount of ink has been spilled discussing Michelle Rhee’s tactics, personality, and disputes with the union, but student results are – without a doubt – the single most important thing to keep an eye on.  The combat narrative makes for good headlines and cocktail party conversation, but the student results are what matters.
