The New Federal Role? Discuss …

I meant to link to this last week, but Anna Phillips at Gotham Schools did a nice breakdown of what seems like a fascinating Columbia Law School event on the new direction of the federal role in education policy.

I think using competition to create proof points for promising strategies is a great role for the federal government.  Something to watch, though, as ESEA reauthorization unfolds: how does this emphasis on competition bolster or compromise efforts around equity?  I guarantee this won’t be trivial.  Folks need to think carefully about how to build capacity in traditionally under-resourced jurisdictions, otherwise the competitive emphasis could actually exacerbate inequity.  The School Improvement Grants (soon to be School Turnaround Grants) are a great example. We’ll be watching this carefully.
